Over the long South African 'Heritage Day' weekend, David and I hit the road to Namibia for some adventure and a new stamp in our passports.
The South African - Namibian border is about 8 hours from Stellenbosch. We spent our first day traveling north and watching the scenery change from mountains covered in rain clouds to the dry, sunny desert. We crossed the Orange River, the natural border between the two countries, late that afternoon and rested up for another long day on the road the following day.
We set out bright and early Saturday morning along a long dirt road that hugged the Orange River before heading up toward the town of Aus. Aus is known for a herd of over 100 wild horses, possibly abandoned by the German army during the first World War. We were lucky enough to catch them just at the right time as they crossed over the road, one by one, in front of us.
After watching these horses for a couple of hours, we continued on our way, through the wind and sand, to the coastal town of Lüderitz.
Sunday we visited the ghost town of Kolmannskuppe, a German diamond mining town abandoned over 50 years ago when bigger and better diamonds were found further south. It was absolutely amazing to walk through these houses and town buildings that were once full of life but now are only home to sand dunes and a few desert animals.
The next day we took the long road back to the border so that we could swing by the Fish River Canyon. It is the second largest canyon in the world; second only to the Grand Canyon.
I even learned to drive our standard rental car as we took in all the sights of southern Namibia. For a spur-of-the-moment and relatively short trip, our Namibian adventure far exceeded our expectations.

On the Road Again- Garden Route
“On the
road again, goin’ places that I’ve never been, seein’ things that I may never
see again, I can’t wait to get on the road again.” - Willie Nelson
The Garden Route is a popular and scenic stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River in the most western part of the Eastern Cape.
We started off Thursday afternoon with a long 5 hour drive to Knysna. Kynsna is a very scenic town located on the shore of a lagoon created by two cliffs on the Indian Ocean.
On Friday, we spent the day at coffee shops on Thesen Island, oyster eating at the waterfront, and hiking out to the scenic “Two Heads”.
Saturday morning we visited the Knysna
Elephant Park- one of the greatest adventures so far during our time here in
South Africa. Knysna Elephant Park is a sanctuary for the southern most elephants in the world. We had a chance to feed them and get
up close and personal with them- much more so than we would have on a safari or
game reserve.
Afterwards, we headed out towards Port
Elizabeth. On the way, we stopped in Tsitsikamma to see a few brave individuals
take a dive off the world’s largest bungee jump- 216 meters to be exact! Don’t
worry- I wouldn’t let David get us anywhere near the sign up desk!
Bright
and early Sunday morning, we found ourselves in Jeffery’s Bay, the surfing
capitol of South Africa, for a quick breakfast and a chance to put my toes in
the Indian Ocean for the first time! We
hit the road again for our trip back west on the scenic R62 towards our next
stop in Oudtshoorn.
Oudtshoorn is
a popular town in the Karoo that is known for ostrich farms. After a couple of
ostrich burgers for dinner, we spent the night outside in a “lodge tent” surrounded
by ostriches. The next morning, David attempted to ride an ostrich but he weighed
too much!

Then we headed back home to Stellenbosch. We had a great weekend
exploring South Africa and will be planning another road trip soon.

Our Rotary Weekend
We started our weekend by visiting the Drakenstein Rotary Club in Northern Paarl on Thursday evening. As part of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, David presents to different Rotary Clubs in the area about our life back in Texas and also a little about his studies and service projects we hope to get involved with here in South Africa. We enjoyed meeting all the members of Drakenstein Rotary and David's first presentation was a success!
Friday night we attended Helderberg Sunrise Rotary's Race Night at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. The theme for the night was "Black and Bling" (none of which I brought with me) but thanks to my co-worker, Jean-Marie, I had a beautiful dress to wear and David looked as handsome as ever in his suit! The Race Night is a fundraiser for local charities in the area and this year the money went to support local animal services including Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha which provides the only permanent, on site veterinary services to the dogs and cats of the more than one million people who live in Khayelitsha.
Sunday we were up dark and early to head in to Cape Town to help marshall for the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. Cape Argus is the world's largest individually timed cycle race- with more than 35,000 cyclists who compete in the 109 km race from Cape Town down the Cape Peninsula and back. We spent the day cheering on the cyclists (with just a little crowd control marshall work mixed in too).
Check back this week for more detailed posts about each event! Happy Monday!!

Our Weekend
cavalli stud farm / uva mira sundowners / starlight classics concert
Friday morning, David and I had the chance to visit Cavalli Stud Farm here in Stellenbosch. We have passed their beautiful farm many times and finally got to see just how gorgeous it really was! We met with Elra and Chad, the horse trainers, for a personal tour of the training facilities as well as the future restaurant site and other parts of the farm. This is a large scale version of David's dream for our place back home- a beautiful barn full of lovely horses and even a vineyard in the back!
Friday night we met with members of the Helderburg Sunrise Rotary Club for Sundowners at Uva Mira. The views at Uva Mira are absolutely stunning and we enjoyed good wine and great company as we watched the sun set over the cape mountains.
We spent Saturday evening with our friends, Robert and Liz, at the Starlight Classics Concert at Vergelegen. This event was spectacular and we are so sad it only happens once a year. Starlight Classics is an open-air concert anchored by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and held on the Great Lawn at Vergelegen Estate. This years program had a great mix of classical and pop music and included popular artists and acts from South Africa- Cape Town Ballet and Choir, Idols
2010 winner, Elvis Blue and South Africa's Got Talent finalists- the PJ Twins- including many others.
